Gallery Alley 2019 Enhancements
Downtown Wichita has partnered with Envision to transform Gallery Alley into a permanent destination for inter-sensory art experiences. This next phase of Gallery Alley will expand on the artwork included in the space with a conscious effort to serve all visitors with specific consideration for individuals of all ages who are blind, visually impaired and for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Call for Entry closed on August 30, 2019, and the selection of artwork is underway. Overall project completion estimated by May 2020.
Downtown Wichita received a grant from the Knight Foundation Fund at the Wichita Community Foundation to enhance Gallery Alley and create an inclusive art destination.
From underutilized to unique. Gallery Alley transformed an underutilized alley into a vibrant public space. Experience life-size sculptures by local artists, listen to the sweet sounds of local musicians, watch a classic film, or leisurely enjoy your lunch on the outdoor dining furniture at this unique space in the heart of Wichita. Explore local visual artists' newest work during the popular First Friday art crawl.
Gallery Alley was a temporary pilot project funded by the Knight Foundation in 2017. In order to improve pedestrian safety and encourage walkability, the City of Wichita made the decision to permanently close Gallery Alley to vehicular traffic and thus made corresponding sidewalk improvements in April of 2019. The goal of the alley is to accelerate revitalization in Downtown Wichita through promoting urban, walkable, people-oriented development and local art through a new urban design concept. Gallery Alley is located at 616 E. Douglas Ave., Wichita, KS 67202.
