38 KANSAS ARTISTS SELECTED FOR ALLEY DOOR PROJECT IN DOWNTOWN WICHITA
Wichita, KS – August 28, 2019 – Thirty-eight Kansas artists have been selected to be included in the Alley Doors project in downtown Wichita. Selected works will assist in transforming overlooked spaces, thereby contributing to the identity and character of downtown. Over two hundred works of art were submitted including mediums such as drawing, painting, graphic design, photography and glass blowing.
This project will utilize the submitted pieces of work to repurpose alley and back-of-building doors, turning them into a discovery driven urban gallery. The artists’ work will be incorporated into an online artwork database where property and business owners can select artwork to be printed on heavy-duty vinyl and applied to their alley or back-of-building door. The installation and launch of the first ten doors will take place in spring 2020.
“We are thrilled to announce that these incredible artists will be participating in this exciting project. We look forward to providing a platform for regional artists to showcase their works while increasing vibrancy in downtown,” said Emily Brookover, Director of Community Development with Downtown Wichita.
A goal of this project is to increase foot-traffic and visibility of these areas and thus enhancing pedestrian safety and combatting vandalism.
The Alley Doors project is led by Downtown Wichita working in collaboration with property and business owners in downtown. Downtown Wichita received a grant from the Knight Foundation Fund at the Wichita Community Foundation for the Alley Doors project.
“This project reflects exactly what the Knight Foundation Fund at WCF focuses on: enhancing our city’s core vibrancy by engaging the community through placemaking. It’s a thoughtful way to activate a currently underutilized space,” said Shelly Prichard, President and CEO of the Wichita Community Foundation.
Property and business owners interested in participating can sign-up at bit.ly/AlleyDoors.
