Flying Rockfish, 2025

The metal and stone fish sculptures of Flying Rockfish are patterned after large-mouth bass native to Kansas rivers and streams, including the Arkansas river in downtown Wichita. The fish heads are made of Winfield limestone, formed over 200 million years ago when Kansas was covered by a shallow sea. Visible fossils -- tiny crinoids and small shells -- pepper the fish heads, serving as a record of creatures from that era. The FlyingRockfish form a school of fish swimming in the Kansas wind.

Mike Miller, Artist

Mike Miller is best known for his Machine-Nature Interface sculptures. The majority of his work is kinetic, and can be powered by anything from a motor and salvaged gears to the wind. Miller was born, raised and educated in Kansas and finds inspiration and materials for both the machine and the nature aspects of his work around his home and studio in rural Butler County.
