The electric guitar is considered the most popular musical instrument of our time. Its presence is found throughout popular culture, both as sound and image. Like all things, it has an origin story. In the 1920s, the electrical amplification of sound emerged, and a race to apply this technology to musical instruments began. Further advancements provided new opportunities – to electrify the guitar and change the world. The instrument’s initial evolution took 40 years to unfold. In this exhibition, that story is told through 15 pivotal and historic instruments.
