Downtown Wichita’s Clean Team Grows to Better Serve the City Core
Downtown is looking better than ever, and there’s a reason for it!
As of Feb. 1, 2026, Downtown Wichita officially expanded its Clean Team program, partnering with Block by Block, a national leader in place management services.
This next phase builds on the success of the Clean Team pilot program, launched in spring 2025. It is funded through the Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District (SSMID).
Bigger Team, Broader Impact
With Block by Block managing the program’s day-to-day operations, the Clean Team has expanded from two part-time positions to four full-time Ambassadors. Weekly service hours have increased from 56 to 127, resulting in more consistent coverage across the district.
“Our goal is simple,” said Heather Schroeder, Executive Director of Downtown Wichita. “We want downtown to feel clean, welcoming and well cared for every day. With expanded SSMID support and Block by Block’s national expertise, we’re building on our earlier accomplishments and taking the Clean Team to the next level.”
What the Clean Team Does
Clean Team Ambassadors are on downtown streets and sidewalks every day, providing services that create an attractive and welcoming city center. Their work includes:
- Removing litter and debris.
- Weed control.
- Removing graffiti, handbills, stickers and posters.
- Special projects like power washing and supplemental snow removal.
- Serving as a friendly public resource for visitors, workers, shoppers and residents.
In addition to daily cleaning, Ambassadors offer extra eyes and ears by reporting larger issues -- such as tripping hazards, water leaks, and encampments -- to the City of Wichita. They also represent Wichita’s signature friendly attitude, offering maps, directions and recommendations to downtown visitors.
Building on a Successful Pilot
During the pilot phase, launched in May 2025 with support from Fidelity Bank, Clean Team Ambassadors maintained 2,748 blocks and collected 21,120 gallons of trash.
The expanded program ensures those efforts continue and grow, supporting downtown’s role as a vibrant place to live, work and gather.
