Meet Dean: Downtown Wichita’s Bright New Addition

Sporting a highlighter yellow T-shirt – and an even brighter smile – is Dean Mefford, the newest member of Downtown Wichita.

Dean serves as the organization’s very first public space ambassador on the newly created Downtown Wichita Clean Team.

The Clean Team is a pilot program designed to boost community pride and maintain cleanliness in Wichita’s most-visited neighborhood.

“It’s a brand-new role. It’s evolving,” shared Dean. “But ultimately, my job is to keep downtown clean and welcoming.”

In just his first six weeks on the job, Dean has already made a significant impact!

He has covered 370 blocks, removed 1,584 gallons of trash, and wiped away 41 graffiti tags from downtown street poles, signage, benches and kiosks. He is also tasked with weed control and tree pruning.

His commitment to maintaining clean and well-maintained spaces stems from decades of experience. Dean joined the Clean Team in May 2025 after a 25-year career at Wichita’s Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. There, he supervised airfield maintenance, keeping runways, taxiways and the surrounding grounds in tip-top shape.

Now, he brings that same commitment to excellence to downtown.

“Every day is a little different,” said Dean. “I might be picking up litter, reporting tripping hazards, flagging graffiti, or helping someone find their way around. It’s all about taking pride in our community.”

Dean is passionate about keeping downtown vibrant because it can shape people’s perceptions and experiences.

“I believe if an area is left dirty, people don't want to invest in it or be around it,” he explained. “It speeds up the decay of the area. Wichita's downtown area has come a long way since the 1980s, when many buildings were abandoned. I am proud to be a part of the work that’s helping it thrive.”

Dean’s also a friendly face downtown. He’s ready to share recommendations or help visitors navigate their next adventure.

“There are so many new shops and interesting restaurants downtown. Some people don’t even know about them yet,” he said. “I enjoy meeting people, being outside and helping share what makes downtown Wichita so special.”

So next time you’re downtown and spot a cheerful figure in a neon yellow shirt, say hello. It’s likely Dean, keeping things clean and ready for you to enjoy.
